How to measure for a battery and inverter cover
A simple 6-step guide to measuring your solar battery, inverter, isolators and cabling so you order the right size outdoor battery cover first time.
Step by step
- Identify everything to be covered. List every component on the wall: battery modules, inverter, isolators, meters, junction boxes and surface-mounted conduit or cable trunking.
- Measure the overall height. Measure from the lowest point of any component or cable entry to the highest point, in millimetres.
- Measure the overall width. Measure from the left-most edge to the right-most edge of the whole group, including cables running sideways.
- Measure the depth. Measure how far the deepest component projects from the wall, including handles, glands and cable bends.
- Add clearance. Check your battery and inverter manuals for required clearances and add them to each dimension. These figures are your minimum internal dimensions.
- Pick the nearest size up. Choose the nearest cover whose internal dimensions are equal to or larger than your figures. If unsure, send photos and measurements to Solar Trading UK for an engineer's recommendation.
You will need: Tape measure, Pencil and paper, Phone camera.
Before you start
All Solar Trading UK cover sizes are internal dimensions. Premium covers are available from 500–2400 mm high, 425–2675 mm wide and 240–605 mm deep in over 1,500 combinations (height in 100 mm steps, width and depth in 125 mm steps). Lite covers come in six fixed sizes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting cable runs that leave the battery at the bottom or side.
- Measuring only the battery and not the inverter or isolator.
- Ignoring manufacturer clearances, which reduces airflow.
- Measuring in inches – our sizes are in millimetres.

FAQs
Are listed cover sizes internal or external?
All listed sizes are internal dimensions, so you can compare them directly with your measurements plus clearance.
What if my installation is between two sizes?
Always choose the next size up so the cover keeps the required ventilation clearance.
